How to Prepare for Autumn

How-to-Prepare-for-Autumn

Hard to believe we’re on the back nine of 2024 and the fall season is quickly approaching. The summers in Minnesota hardly seem to last long enough, so it’s understandable that you may want to hang on to the season a bit longer. If you’re hesitant to welcome the cooler temps ahead, our Southview Senior Communities can help ease the transition. Keep reading to discover some ideas on how to prepare for autumn.

Spend Time Outdoors

That’s right. Just because the weather is changing doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy the outdoors. In fact, you may even prefer the cooler temps and crisper air, especially when the leaves start to change color. And being outdoors has proven health benefits, like reducing anxiety and depression. So, enjoy as much of it as you can.

Soak in all of nature’s fall beauty by taking a walk with a friend or going on a hike to surround yourself with the colorful foliage. Or, if you prefer, find a comfortable spot to sit outside with a friend or a book. Listen to the rustling leaves, watch the birds do their thing, or gaze at the sun as it descends toward the horizon.

Start Putting Up Seasonal Décor

You have to admit that fall colors are vibrant and pretty. And there’s just something comforting about fall décor. We recommend stocking up on all things fall to decorate your home, your front door, and your community to welcome the new season.

At each of our Southview Senior Communities, we plan regular activities—including group outings—to appeal to a variety of resident interests. To prepare for autumn, perhaps a trip to an apple orchard or a pumpkin patch is in order.

Look for pumpkins to display and carve or decorative gourds to enhance your surroundings. Collect acorns and straw for making scarecrows or other fall-themed crafts. And don’t forget the spooky decorations for Halloween!

Incorporate Fall Flavors

We all know what fall smells like, and it’s savory and sweet and delicious. Awaken those memories of fall with the scents and flavors we all associate with the season, including:

  • Apple
  • Pumpkin
  • Maple
  • Cinnamon
  • Caramel

Enjoy a mug of warm apple cider or bake an apple pie. Make pumpkin bars or caramel apples. Heat up some spiced potpourri and fill your home with its seasonal fragrance. Incorporate fall veggies like brussels sprouts, potatoes, and spinach into daily meals. Find new, cozy soup recipes to try as the weather gets colder.

Warm Up Your Wardrobe

Cooler fall temperatures create the perfect opportunity for dressing in layers. Temps are often still warm during the day, but the sunrise and sunset hours may require additional attire. Get those lightweight jackets, sweaters, and flannels from the closet and put them back into rotation. Reach for a favorite hat or scarf to round out your wardrobe and stay cozy when it’s cool.

Now is also a good time to make sure you have enough throw blankets in each room. Even with the extra layers of clothing, curling up under a fuzzy blanket presents a comfort like no other.
