Ways to Stay Active for Seniors

Ways-to-Stay-Active-for-Seniors

With the days getting shorter and the weather getting colder, hibernation season is upon us. But staying active all year round has a host of health benefits, especially for seniors. Rest assured our Southview Senior Communities provide plenty of life enrichment activities for residents. Keep reading to learn about some of those as well as other ways to stay active despite the changing seasons.

Take Advantage of the Weather

The weather is changing, but Minnesota still has plenty of lovely days in the fall. And there’s no better way to experience the fall colors than with a walk or a hike. As the weather permits, consider heading outdoors for a stroll with friends or family. Dress in layers to ensure you stay comfortable throughout the day.

To make your walks even more exciting, create a nature scavenger hunt to see how many seasonal things you and your walking companions can find!

When the weather gets too cold or too damp to walk outside, move your route indoors. Walking through the hallways (and up and down stairs, for those who are able) in any of our Southview Senior Communities provides a decent workout. And hallway strolls offer opportunities for socializing with neighbors and staff, which can help ward off feelings of loneliness that often accompany seasonal changes.

Tackle Chores Around Your Home

Doing chores may sound like, well, a chore, but household tasks can help you stay physically and mentally active. Many activities—like dusting, vacuuming, and organizing—provide low-impact workouts that help maintain strength and joint flexibility.

And daily or weekly chores keep the brain active, which helps maintain or enhance memory, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.

Sign Up for a Group Outings Adventure

Each Southview Community offers regular group outings so residents can enjoy an off-campus meal, take in a show, stroll through local museums or zoos, visit pumpkin patches or apple orchards, and so much more. We are sure to keep an eye on the weather and gear our adventures toward season-appropriate outings.

These activities provide ample opportunity to spend time with old friends or make new ones while exploring the sights and scenes around our community and the Twin Cities. Group outings are a fantastic way to stay engaged physically, socially, and emotionally.

Check Out Our Community Calendars

Our Southview Senior Communities’ monthly calendars are chock full of events and activities for all abilities and interests. We want to make sure residents can maintain an engaged and active lifestyle in a supportive and enriching environment. From card games and happy hours to strength classes and support groups, residents are sure to find something of interest to stay busy and active throughout the year.

Live entertainment shows and arts and crafts projects are extremely popular in all our communities. Local musicians share their talents to keep residents moving, shaking, and dancing. And creative endeavors allow residents the chance to express themselves through artistic means in the company of friends and neighbors.
